Mobile plan types explained

An overview of the main kinds of UK mobile plans and who each one tends to suit. Prices and offers change often, so always confirm the latest terms with the provider.

Pay monthly phone contracts

A handset and an airtime plan, often split into two agreements: a device plan (paying off the phone) and an airtime plan (minutes, texts and data).

Suits you if

  • You want a new phone without paying the full price upfront
  • You're happy committing to 24–36 months

Watch out for

  • Annual price rises
  • Total cost compared with buying the phone outright plus SIM-only

SIM-only plans

You keep your existing (unlocked) phone and pay only for the airtime. Available on 30-day rolling, 12-month or 24-month terms.

Suits you if

  • Your current phone works well
  • You want the lowest monthly cost or flexibility

Watch out for

  • Whether your phone is unlocked
  • Introductory prices that rise later

Upgrades

When your minimum term ends you can usually upgrade, switch provider, or move to SIM-only. Out-of-contract customers can often save by reviewing their plan.

Suits you if

  • Your contract is ending or has ended
  • Your current handset is paid off

Watch out for

  • Paying the old handset price after the contract has ended
  • Early upgrade fees

Family & multi-line plans

Several lines on one account, sometimes with shared data or discounts per extra line.

Suits you if

  • You manage phones for a household
  • You want parental controls or spending caps

Watch out for

  • Each line's individual contract end date

Data-only & tablet SIMs

Data-only plans for tablets, mobile broadband routers and smartwatches.

Suits you if

  • You need connectivity on the go for a second device

Watch out for

  • Fair-use limits on “unlimited” data

Refurbished phones

Professionally restored handsets that can cost much less than new, often sold with a warranty.

Suits you if

  • You want a good phone for less
  • You care about reducing e-waste

Watch out for

  • Warranty length and battery condition grading
